In order to create a pool large enough to be worth producing, several geologic elements are necessary to accumulate the oil and gas.

For example, two necessary elements are rich organic source rocks are needed to generate oil or gas and porous reservoir rocks are needed to store the petroleum. Additionally, a trap needs to be built to retain the oil and gas and keep it from leaking away.
